The Department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology (SBT) forms part of the Faculty of Forest Sciences, has about 50 employees and is located in both Umeå and Uppsala. The Department carries out high quality research and under- and postgraduate education on a high international level and collaborates with society and industry to develop a bio-based economy where forest biomaterials are an important resource. The major focus in Umeå lies on value chains in the bio-based industry, where different components of forest biomaterials are collected, characterized, separated, modified / processed, used and re-used cost-effectively for different purposes while forest ecosystem services are managed sustainably. In Uppsala, the focus lies on wood science and technology with research and education on wood materials from nano- to macro levels and with accredited testing of wood products and treatments for the market.


We seek a talented research assistant to join a dynamic and motivated team working with aspects of wood science including micro- and ultrastructure of wood materials, wood biodeterioration, durability and testing and modification approaches. Practical working includes using aseptic conditions, fungal culturing, immunological staining and EU-Standards for wood testing. The person will be responsible for the routine running of the laboratory including preparation of laboratory materials, assisting with student practicals as well as safety, environmental and chemical controls. Knowledge of accredited work according to ISO/IEC 17025 is merit.


Applicants need to have background in aspects of Wood Science and Technology or related subjects and have a university degree relevant in the field. The person should have practical experience working with wood materials including microscopy approaches, wood durability testing against decay organisms as well as different types of wood protection. Good ability to speak and write in Swedish and English and to work effectively both in a group and independently. Knowledge of accredited work according to ISO/IEC 17025 is a merit. We are seeking a person with relevant masters/doctors degree and experience in the wood science area.
